Description

THE LONGER ROAD HOME is the fictional life story of Sam Freberg, an idealistic, troubled, gay Jewish musician born into a dysfunctional working class family in the 1940s. In his college years Sam discovers his same-sex orientation and comes out in the hostile environment prevalent in LA in the 60s. After brushes with law enforcement and descent into compulsive sex, drugs, and gambling, he joins the emerging gay liberation movement in the late 70s only to be confronted with AIDS a few years later when he is diagnosed HIV positive. The book is about Sam’s struggle to survive, find himself, and recover from disease and addiction as he seeks health and inner freedom through therapy, 12-step programs, alternative medicine, yoga, and shamanism. In the spirit of On The Road, Portnoy’s Complaint, Forest Gump, and Siddhartha, his is a gritty, humor-filled, heartfelt journey.
