I pleaded with him to wait till I got my wages, but he wouldn’t relent. One midnight I fell into a drainpipe-the lid had been stolen by junkies, but the authorities pay no attention. He showed his arm, cast in plaster. “You must be careful when you run, especially at midnight.”
