For instructional purposes the medical practitioners in the vignettes make multiple errors and miss vital pieces of information, allowing the student-readers to feel comfortably superior, as well as allowing instructors to make useful teaching points. The vignette format serves as a non-threatening manner in which to present major mental illnesses as they may be encountered in real world settings.
