Description
Description of Book I was attending a trauma conference that my university was holding. I attended one of the workshop that a young woman was holding. She was an advocate that worked with a Sheriff’s department in Florida. She began to explain to us that situation may not always be the way it looks. She gave an example of a young boy of 5 found wondering the streets. The boy was found by the Sheriff’s office and her office was called. The boy did say anything and could not tell why he was on the street by himself. He was taken to the doctor to ensure he was medically okay. He was placed on five different medications; none of them medical medications. It was later found that he had been traumatized, she would not give the specific details. Her words still stick with me to this day; “Don’t assume when assessing a person, their symptoms may look one way, but when a person has experienced a trauma, it can appear as anything.” She placed us in groups and gave us scenarios. The woman I was setting with had been raped 25 years prior on her way to her car after work. The scenario was that exact same one as hers. She began to cry and experienced anxiety when talking about her situation. It was at that point that my career focused took a different direction. After completing my degree and becoming certified as a trauma specialist, I wanted to spread the message of my experience that day. PTSD/trauma is complicated and complex. Other professionals needed to know and understand not to assume that because someone was angry, they are anti-social. I even began to understand myself more. I am a trauma survivor myself. I have made many presentations and held many trainings on trauma. The next obvious step was to write this book.
