Maggie’s Story – Irrepressible Maggie tells the story of Margaret Anne Groves who started drinking as a child … around the family’s kitchen table with her mother and older brother. That was the way they passed the evenings in their small, isolated rural home. Drinking helped Maggie escape being socially awkward, wearing hand-me-down clothes and being physically unattractive.

After struggling to complete high school, Maggie moved to Oil City to work and create a new life style. At the city’s daily newspaper, she entered an inspirational milieu for her latent ability to write. To advance, Maggie took college journalism courses. She started writing columns for the newspaper. Her reputation for perceptive insights and reliable reporting grew. Owners of Alberta News Services recruited Maggie. Facing the challenges of ageing, they sold their business to her. Although an accomplished writer, she was a financial failure.

Alcohol abuse fuelled Maggie’s “wrong headed” choices … about investments and other business decisions, sexual relations, marriages and leaving her kids. She was “on the brink” when she met Henry Hillhouse, an accountant, during a flight to St. Maarten. Both were hurting from broken relations and fleeing for a break. What started as a fractious flight evolved into a deeply meaningful relationship.
